Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-10-24 (install count added in version 0.1.1)
Tokei is a macOS menu bar app, published by wormadev, that shows how much of your Claude and Codex plans you have used. This policy describes what the app does with your data.
Summary
- There are no accounts, no tracking and no ads.
- If you opt in, Tokei counts your install with a random ID. Nothing else about you is kept.
- Your sign-in tokens are sent only to the provider they belong to.
- Your usage numbers and settings stay on your Mac.
What Tokei reads
- Claude: the sign-in Claude Code saved in
~/.claude/.credentials.json, or, after you click Connect in Settings, theClaude Code-credentialsitem in your Keychain. - Codex: the sign-in Codex saved in
~/.codex/auth.json(or$CODEX_HOME/auth.json).
Tokei never refreshes, changes or stores these tokens anywhere else.
Who Tokei talks to
- api.anthropic.com: your Claude usage, profile and plan, with your Claude token, and a banked reset when you click to use one.
- chatgpt.com: your Codex usage, with your Codex token.
- status.claude.com and status.openai.com: public service status, with no token. You can turn this off in Settings > Display.
- tokei.worma.dev and github.com: update checks. They go to tokei.worma.dev, which forwards them to the update feed and new versions on GitHub. You can turn automatic checks off in Settings > General.
What Tokei stores
The last usage numbers, so they show instantly at launch, in ~/Library/Application Support/Tokei/state.json, and your settings in the app's preferences. Both stay on your Mac. Deleting the app and these files removes everything.
Anonymous install count
Off unless you turn it on, either with "Include anonymous system profile" when Tokei first asks about updates, or with Share anonymous install count in Settings > General. When it's on, each update check also sends:
- a random ID created on your Mac, not tied to you or your accounts;
- Sparkle's anonymous system profile, at most once a week: app build, macOS version, CPU type, Mac model, memory and language.
tokei.worma.dev keeps only the ID, the app build, the macOS version and the CPU type, per day, to count how many Macs run Tokei. It doesn't store IP addresses, and the model, memory and language are discarded. The totals are public at tokei.worma.dev/api/stats. Turn it off in Settings and nothing more is sent.
Notifications
If you allow them, reset notifications are created on your Mac. Nothing is sent to a push service.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
